Fuzfo, more on qlogic..I guess LSI doesn't have 80% of the design wins after all Shares Of QLogic, Emulex Rise Amid Praise For Fibre-Channel Approach By Rick Jurgens, Staff Reporter NEW YORK (Dow Jones)- Shares of QLogic Corp. and Emulex Corp., two companies involved in fibre-channel technology, soared in heavy trading Friday. QLogic's Nasdaq-listed shares (QLGC) gained $13, or 35%, to 50.50 Friday. Volume totaled nearly 2.8 million shares, compared with average daily turnover in the stock of 127,180. Meanwhile, Emulex's shares (EMLX) added $2.875, or 39%, to $10.25. Nasdaq volume in the stock totaled 822,300 shares, compared with average daily volume of 62,000 shares. QLogic's shares jumped after the company posted strong first-quarter sales and earnings, which QLogic linked to strong demand for its fibre channel adapters and chips. Emulex's shares apparently rose on the strength of QLogic's first-quarter performance. QLogic posted quarterly earnings of 52 cents a share, exceeding the mean estimate of 43 cents a share in a survey of three analysts by First Call. The results also topped last year's first-quarter earnings of 35 cents. Fibre-channel technology is a new computer-industry standard that allows the transfer of data between computers and peripherals at quicker rates and among more connections than past systems. Neil Cooper, an analyst with Cruttendon Roth Inc., said the technology is gaining acceptance as a way of connecting servers with data-storage machines. A future generation of products may use the technology to connect multiple servers and storage units, he added. Jim Thayer, an analyst with Prudential Securities, said fibre channel accounted for only 10% of QLogic's sales during the first quarter, but he expects it to account for a growing proportion of the company's business. First-quarter fibre-channel sales were three times those in the previous quarter, he noted. Steve Denegri, an analyst with Morgan Keegan & Co., said a decision by Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) to use QLogic's fibre channel technology signaled acceptance of the new version of interconnecting servers and disk storage cabinets. This week International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) and Fujitsu Ltd.'s Amdahl Corp. unit announced plans to use Emulex's fibre-channel products. QLogic designs and supplies semiconductor and board-level input/output products. Emulex is a designer of network-connectivity products. Both companies are based in Costa Mesa, Calif.
