Lynn. Re: CPQ name change. I think you have a very good idea. When you think about it, the merger of CPQ, Tandem, and Digital now puts CPQ in a better position to exploit Intel's microprocessor roadmap than just about anyone else. (This assumes they successfully rationalize their cost structure, to keep the lean structure.)

The name change would jolt the market into thinking about them in a new way faster than waiting for the earnings to demonstrate it. The fact that they have chosen a new ad agency recently may indicate they are considering a new corporate "branding" program. It could be easier with a new name. The downside of a name change is the tremendous investment that must be made over time in the new name linking it the the company's products. A new company without any heritage also could make the company seem more distant and cold, which is not a good image for a consumer product company.

Don't have any good suggestions. I think initials are a bit cold and too easy to compare to IBM. Their geographic spread and wide product line could suggest names like, "Global Computing" but that sounds a bit flat. Maybe someone else will have a better name.

Lynn,

With all due respect, I disagree with the name change. The Name compaq is a formidable one highly recognized throughout the world. You can't beat the name compaq for recognition. However, I wholeheartedly agree with your previous post regarding disemination of info from cpq pr people. Peace and good luck.

Lynn,
A name change could be tough at this point. Compaq is a world wide name at this point. Can't say some of the name changes other companies have made did them any good.

I think I have found a name that Compaq MUST use.

Compaq can use a name the sounds more "worldly" than IBM (International Business Machines Corp.), and it will be bigger. Compaq can be kept for the brand name of computers.

I like the way the name WorldCom instantly changed the image of the original company. (And it is better translated into other languages, such as Chinese, much better than Compaq's translation for its image and business nature.) In addition to the effects to its external image, a good name can help a company makes its vision more clear and be more aware internally.

"IT" is known for its connection with "IT department" of bigger companies. Professionals and business world know it as encompassing many areas of information technology and services. "World Information Technology" might have been used already and we want a shorter name. So here is my suggestion:

WorldIT or "World IT" (WIT).

For an ad campaign or for its vision statement, Compaq can say "World IT, IT for the World".
Or "World IT will world it for you" for those big businesses, and would its mark of making "world" as a verb in the English language.

I think I am getting serious about this. I want suggest this to Compaq. Could Rudedog or anyone pass this suggestion on to your influential insiders at Compaq? If they like it, it'd better register this name FAST! It is not been found on the Internet yet.
