I agree with you completely, Peacelover, about the international recognition of the name 'Compaq.' Taking up a point Harry, who likes the idea of a name change, made (#29523):

"...A new company without any heritage also could make the company seem more distant and cold, which is not a good image for a consumer product company..."

Here's an idea: How about changing the name from Compaq Computer Corporation to just Compaq Corporation? As Harry said, it is costly to change the name of a corporation but dropping the 'Computer' from the name of CPQ would, in actuality, address a number of problems, including Compaq as merely box maker.

This slight yet significant name change could make for a great advertising campaign. It would keep the baby [Compaq] while throwing out the bath water [Computer]. If they hurry, they can make some great ads for Monday Night Football, like one promoting AltaVista where it is obvious a Compaq box is being used.
