They ended the spot saying that Apple market share may have peaked.

I think many customers are going through the last round of updates before abandoning the platform. This trend has been observed in other product phase-outs before (albeit not a single example comes to mind right now).

I think Apple needs two things to forestall this event. One, continue specializing in the niches they have left, so that installed base reconsiders their decision. Two, the iMac has to be nearly identical to Win98, but better. The standard "same but different" oxymoron. Allow me to explain.

Same A layman should not see any difference off-hand between the iMac and Win98. Yes, an icon here or there might be different, but laymen do not take notice. For example, what is the difference between the speedometer in your and your spouse's car? Unless you are a car buff, you would answer "they are pretty much the same".

Different The salesperson should be the one talking about the differences, e.g. "well, the iMac over here is easier to install. About 25% of our PC customers call us back with questions after purchasing one compared to 5% for iMacs. Plus, it is 20% faster and is internet ready with a 56K modem and ethernet card for cable modem." (Using the car analogy, "this Honda Accord has power locks and windows, it gives you better mileage and it breaks down three times less often that the standard american car").

I think investors here should keep an eye in this (and other) initiatives that will ensure Apple's survival for the long run.

Publishing ? - CNBC's commentator needs to visit MacWorld , Seybold

>> " Later in the spot (on CNBC), there was stated concerns about software applications for the web publishing " <<

From MacWorld Singapore's 7/24/98 content web site:

" The tools of the publisher of today are becoming more and more relevant to the consumer and educator alike.

DV cameras, Power Macintosh G3 and PowerBook G3, DVD, Quicktime, AppleScript, ColorSync, and Web Objects, are letting publishing companies reinvent their businesses, providing small businesses access to tools that weren't previously available, and helping educators create the multimedia classroom of today.

Digital Video, Image Editing, and Internet Publishing are disciplines that were previously separate artisans and different tools.

Today convergence means that these skills and technologies are becoming inseparable and the people using them are blending them on the web, in print, and in digital video; all as digital media.

Publishers, Educators, and Consumers are no longer limited to just one media to communicate their ideas.

The Power Macintosh G3 and PowerBook G3 platform is the launching pad that brings vision to media without compromise of quality, time, or cost.
"

Plus there is SF's Seybold 8/31/98 where he will see a cross-platform OS with publishing apps . Seems like AAPL has it covered plus add the iMAC launch to the above .

As an aside , did the commentator look like he was related to Bruce Francis ? ;>)

Regards,
Jim K.

Stan,

Apple will indeed be a turnaround story of all tech stocks in '98.
The iMax will be in the market very soon and pre-orders have reached
100,000 units. Some experts have predicted Apple will sell 400,000
units by the end of current quarter. Therefore, the market share is
just beginning to pick up. I expect Apple will have about 5.5%-6%
market share from currently 4%. iMac is introducted at the right
moment especially prior to the preschool-opening season. I don't
believe there is much overlap between G3 machines and iMac since
they focus on different market arenas, one is in the consumer market,
the other is in business and professional market.

Based on last Friday's stock performance, Apple was still acting
pretty firmly. Some profit-taking and ex-option-expiration
side-effect pulled down the price a bit. In the final 20 minutes,
the price moved back to where they were in the beginning, which
strongly indicates that the options calls have been almost cleaned
up. The upward trend has been still intact since it didn't test
the last Thursday's lowest of $35.75. If we could break $37.25
tomorrow, then the stock will quickly move up to challenge yearly
high of $38.125 and probably will come as early as final hour trading
tomorrow or Tuesday. Well, IBM's quarter report will more or less
impact the tech stocks as a whole. The summer rally will continue
as the rest of stocks will also be moved up led by tech sector.

Cheers,
Phil

I saw this piece also. The comment below was a cut away from the correspondent to this nobody ever heard of lone big time "expert witness" web publisher type guy.

<<Later in the spot, there was stated concerns about software applications for the web
publishing market, especially, which are too limited.>>

He said, roughly, that the mac did not have the tools for big time web publishing (sites?)

I was wondering what made this guy an expert on Macs if he was doing all his work on whatever
else he was doing all his work on (presumably NT) It all sounded like one of those doom and gloom sounds bites from 6 month ago. Maybe it was.

I thought it was an inept piece.

I cashed in my chips on the 14th and would now like to see myself back at the table. Maybe we will see 36. We shall see

On another note....................
At least I can still invest in Apple's computers
I plan to buy an iMac on the 15th possibly at CompUsa depending on what they might be throwing
in with box.

I'd like to connect it up with my 6100/66 via Ethernet to be able to utilize my scanner, printer and quick cam and anything else that comes to mind . Is this a matter of just wiring. Will AAUI Ethernet connector work seamlessly with the 100 BaseT on the iMac without hubs and stuff or is here more to it than that. Or is the 6100/66 connector just that....a connector. Does Ethernet actually have to be added via a card ?
I know next to nothing about Ethernet. but I'd like to try to make this work.

Any advice or direction will be greatly appreciated.

It seems to me that this connect-ability via Ethernet with older PwrMacs is an important point
regarding the iMacs viability for current owners.

Thanks, Peter Kelly
