If you mean non-qualified as the term is used for tax purposes, I believe your statement is not correct. I know some Dell employees, and under their option plan they can exercise and hold, (requires up-front payment of the strike price plus the tax liability); or execute a "cash-less" exercise, which means the options are executed and the stock is immediately sold. Taxes are withheld and the balance is paid to the employee.

Exercising and holding, if you can afford it, has some great advantages .
