Re: "Can the news in this sector get any worse going forward? I don't
see how anything worse could be announced than what has been.

Therefore, it seems like this must be the real bottom unless the market as a whole dives."

It is hard to imagine the news getting much (note: this does not say "any") worse for the semi-equip group. That would lead me to think that the trading range of 26-32 is at least a near-term bottom for AMAT.

I tend to think the market is pricing in a mid-99 recovery, and there are no guarantees this will happen. However, even if a recovery doesn't materialize in mid-99, the CEOs will probably do the carrot routine again and state they feel a full recovery will happen in the next quarter or two. And they can't be penalized for stating an opinion.

My understanding is that the B2B is due out tomorrow. My guess is that it will be weak, possibly even surprisingly weak.

Re: "Can the news in this sector get any worse going forward?"

If the market for semiconductor equipment just keeps on contracting beyond what people are expecting, that would definitely qualify as worse news, justifying lower prices. This is not a prediction, but just a possible scenario. I think we at least have to allow for that possibility.
