NEWS FLASH: (BSNS WIRE) Yoplait Has Modified Yogurt Container to Prevent Skunks from Yoplait Has Modified Yogurt Container to Prevent Skunks from Becoming Trapped Business Editors NOTE TO MEDIA: Photo available on BW PhotoWire/AP PhotoExpress, PressLink Online and on Business Wire's Web site at www.businesswire.com MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 21, 1998--Following 10 months of intensive research, Yoplait yogurt has developed a new package that will help prevent skunks from becoming trapped, and in some cases killed, in discarded yogurt containers. The new packaging is already on grocery store shelves in California and will soon make their way into stores across the country. Between two and 14 skunks last year were reported killed after their heads became stuck inside discarded Yoplait yogurt containers. Yoplait yogurt was informed of the problem 10 months ago by animal-rights activists and has incorporated their concerns into a new package design to help make the yogurt cups skunk-proof. The single surest way to solve the problem is to properly crush and discard the yogurt cups in the first place. All cups will be inscribed with the message, "Protect Wildlife Crush Before Disposal." The new Yoplait container is manufactured from polypropylene, and it cracks easily. Once crushed and cracked, the container is skunk-proof. "The number of skunks injured doesn't sound like a lot, but it's 14 too many, and that's why we are taking action and changing our packaging," said David Dix, spokesperson for General Mills, the makers of Yoplait yogurt. "The best way to solve the problem is to follow new directions for disposal printed on the containers, which reads: "Protect Wildlife Crush Before Disposal." The design changes make it more difficult for a skunk to get its head into a yogurt container and easier for the skunk to remove it. The modifications to the new style cup include a new seal flange which does not turn back inside the container, the removal of stacking lugs which makes it easier for the skunk to shake off the cup, and a flange added to the bottom of the cup making it easier for the skunk to push the cup off with typical grooming behavior. --30--mb/ms* CONTACT: General Mills, Minneapolis David Dix, 612/540-7048 KEYWORD: MINNESOTA INDUSTRY KEYWORD: PHOTO PHOTOWIRE FOODS/BEVERAGES PHOTO: bw2 Today's News On The Net - Business Wire's full file on the Internet with Hyperlinks to your home page.
