A wee bit of competition coming...

Definitly a threat, but so far not a very competent one. First there was the 'replacement for the internet' (MSN, failed), then the ultimate destination site (Sidewalk, minor player), the online news magazine (Slate, pretty much invisible), the replacement for all search engines (comming soon, a year behind schedule) and of course the first attempt at a portal site (Start, mostly ignored).

The internet is something Bill wants to own, is financially capable of dominating, but that keeps eluding him. It is not as easy to dominate a medium that lets anyone go where they want as it is to dominate an industry standardized on your OS.

It will be interesting to watch this round.
