DBII has entered the palm scanner market for 1999:

MINNETONKA, Minn., July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Biometrics, Inc. (Nasdaq: DBII), a Minneapolis-based supplier of biometric identification products and systems integration services, announced the first public demonstration today of its new 5-1/2 by 8 inch Palm Print Scanning System for the law enforcement market. The new DBI Palm Scanner is being shown at the International Association for Identification (IAI) Conference in Little Rock, Ark., today through July 22, 1998.

The Digital Biometrics Palm Scanner is the first booking station product to capture an entire hand print in one scan. This means that the DBI Palm Scanner is the only palm-scanning system which meets the IAI Palm Print Specification of a 5-1/2 by 8 inch scanned area. Digital Biometrics will offer the Palm Scanner as an option with its 1133S TENPRINTER fingerprint capture and booking system.

James C. Granger, President and CEO of Digital Biometrics, noted, "We are dedicated to changing the very nature of live-scan through the application of new technology which will provide information not previously thought possible, and at prices which will encourage the expansion of the market. DBI's new Palm Scanner takes an image of the entire hand, rather than just a portion of the palm, and does so without distortion problems. We are delighted to be the only vendor to meet the challenge of the IAI's 5-1/2 by 8 inch standard. Our plan is to begin shipment of a limited number of units in calendar 1998 with full production planned for 1999."

Granger continued, "When the new management team joined Digital Biometrics in 1997, we concluded that to create real value for our shareholders, DBI needed new products, services, markets and approaches. Our successful entry into commercial systems integration through the Integrated Information Solutions Division (IIS) was one step. Commercializing TRAK-21 through an innovative partnership with Grand Casinos was another. With today's showing of our new Palm product, we demonstrate the same type of forward-looking initiative in our original live-scan business."

Although they are getting creamed, DBII seems to be the only company willing to compete with IDX in the AFIS markets. Printrak seems to be leaving for other areas, and FINX is gone (although I think I just saw the corpse twitch).
