Intel will have a faster chip out by that time. This is simply the story of the leader and the laggard (AMD).

Petz - AMD delays K7 until LATE 1999

{====================================}

"AMD said it will port its upcoming K7 processor to a
0.18-micron process and aluminum interconnects in the fourth quarter 1999, switching to copper in 2000 at its fab in Dresden, Germany. "

Petz - Re: " AMD says K7 chip will hit 1GHz in early 2000."

AMD has become real good at announcing future products.

That seems to be the only thing they are good at these days.

Re: *** K7 Chip to Hit 1 GHz in 2000

Don't hold your breath.

Is it possible for AMD to triple its clock speed in less than two years?? Yeah.

Is it likely?? Hell NO!!

Unfortunately, AMD keeps making these big promises (or at least Jerry does) but they always seem to falter on the execution. Legal battles with the 486, design problems with the K5, and production problems with the K6.

Besides the fact that there is this disturbing trend of problems, there is also the fact that the much of the production problem with the K6 was 100% preventable. Heads did roll and lessons were learned. But I'm not fully convinced that they won't be forgotten.

I think that the Dresden fab has the potential to be a huge success and hopefully they will have learnt a few lessons about bringing a megafab into production.

John,

Re: "AMD said the first K7 chips will be produced in a 0.25-micron process ..."

How fast do you expect the K7 in .25um to run ... maybe 300mhz or 350mhz ??
I expect that Intel processors will be 500+mhz in .25um and 600+mhz in .18um when
AMD releases the K7.

You know that Intel will be releasing their .18um process and CPU's in a little
over one year from now. AMD is falling even further behind in process technology,
John ... doesn't look good for AMD.

Make It So,
