One way or another, the federal government is going to get its hands around the Internet. FTC Chairman Robert Pitofsky yesterday told the House that Congress "should seriously consider legislation" if the Internet doesn't come up with ways to protect users' privacy. Somehow we suspect nothing short of draconian measures will ever satisfy the government. And once the first set of regs are in place, others are sure to follow, until Washington figures out a way to enact the big one--some sort of tax or tariff on Internet traffic. They'll promise privacy today, but make sure users pay forever tomorrow.
