If this stock does not go up tomorrow on an overall good market day. What I mean is the nasdaq and sp 500 is up. Then this stock is all done get rid of it and short it for the bad earning news. It been trending down the last four days what more do you need to know this stock it dead. I bought it at 13 9/16 and will get out if it open lower tomorrow and short it on the first uptick.

For a first post, it shows remarkable promise. Welcome.

Is Adaptec a buggy-whip manufacturer? Depends on how much emphasis you put on their SCSI business and how much credit you give to their present and potential entries into new technologies (Firewire and others). If you think SCSI is all there is to the company, it's not a good investment imo. If you can see promise in their R&D and forthcoming products, it looks better. Earnings come out tomorrow, and we're all waiting to see what they do. With 600-700 mil in cash, though, and patents and products on hand, it's hard to see a good argument for valuing the stock much lower than it is unless you a) believe the lawsuits will result in high damages not covered by insurance or b) have no confidence in management (which has been discussed on the thread).

Welcome, and keep the good posts coming.

Re: "My question to the group is, can this company turn around or is an investment in Adaptec the equivalent of an investment in a buggy-whip manufacturer when cars came on the scene?"

That is the key question. The current market price indicates that there are many who think that the odds are against an ADPT turnaround. However, if ADPT can turn around, by excelling in the cutting-edge I/O technologies, then the stock is grossly undervalued at $12+.

I'm betting that the street is wrong on this one, that ADPT's future is much more than SCSI, and that ADPT is grossly undervalued.

I agree with your remarks about market bottoms. The bottom occurs when the news and near-term outlook are terrible. By the time things start to look better, the price is higher. This week could be the bottom.

Best wishes,

I2
