John, just a quick note (or two) on TDW.

I listened to the conference call the other day and the CEO was tickled pink that they had been buying back shares. In the quarter ended in June they had repurchased 500,000 shares for a cost of $18 million dollars and in the past 3 weeks had repurchased 747,000 shares for $25 million. He was absolutely beside himself that the market would be so dumb as to let him buyback shares in the low $30's.

I had scanned through my ML reports on the oil sector and saw that Michael Price was rumored to have been buying TDW near the end of June.

What does this mean? Since TDW is reacting to the low oil prices and competition in the GOM, you may want to set the CASH level relatively low.

FWIW, I own a bunch of TMAR which is underwater right now and think it is the best for the price, otherwise I'd be buying TDW as it looks like a good long term value stock. I'm not sure you would want to AIM it unless you are willing to pull some "Vealies" occasionally. If and when la Nina hits the east cost this winter, I suspect you are going to generate sells in this group. When I set the CASH position for our model portfolios, I took a look at a service that is no longer public (I'm not a member) and it appeared that this group was in the "very low risk" area, but had not yet bottomed. So far the "had not bottom" has worked out. ;-)

Hi John,
EAT: This is far from in-depth research, but the 100 week graph shows that this recent slide is on low volume. That might help confirm your "basing" ideas. I've eaten at Chillie's in Florida, but don't know the rest of the chain.

techstocks.com

It's underperforming the NASDAQ for the period, but what hasn't?

HMSY: It looks as though this stock bottomed a year ago and is still trying to make some new headway. Sell-off in recent days had a bit of volume with it. The last folks throwing in the towel??

APPB: So far, until the last couple of days, 1998 has been good to this hash slinger. I've eaten at Appleby's and the food's generally pretty good and my kids can always find something to eat. Again, low volume seems to be indicative that the stock might be basing.

TDW: What can I say!!! Gold hasn't been very precious recently and other than some wiggles along the way, the two year trend stinks. Is it over yet? Maybe we should ask Mr. Greenspan!

ADSK: Boy, plenty of AIM activity there! I would guess that deep pockets are necessary with Autodesk. I've never followed the stock, so would have to look at it very carefully, but sure looks like a rough ride without AIM!!

Best regards, Tom

Hi John,
Did you know that SI's charts could be grouped together? Here's APPB and EAT - both in the same business:

John, I don't want to plug individual stocks on this thread, but two of my favorites are now going thru one of their "the world is coming to and end" phases. Might be suitable AIM stocks for you to consider.
