OK, one last post tonight:

Why is the market so concerned about Intel? Sure, they are BIG and can certainly pose a threat, but they aint there yet. What do they have in the i740? They got the technology from Lockheed. They bought Chips and Technologies. They virtually dumped the chips. And the lackluster i740 is the best they can do? I look at it this way: every computer shipped with an i740 represents a potential customer for a V2 board.

The integrated graphics chip: Socket 7 and slot 1 are places to put a chip. A variety of chips. Why is this done? Because 1) people can upgrade and 2) because a motherboard can be stocked and a variety of chips can be used to keep up with technology and to offer different processors at different price points. This suggests that an integrated graphics chip is not a threat... since not even the CPU is a fixed product...and since graphics power is growing faster than CPU power and that people want the ability to upgrade. Integrating on the motherboard will lead to out of date product. Integrating on the chip will lead to outdated AND more expensive CPU's. The fact that Dell, or any other boxmaker, sells P2 300's and 400's suggest that different users will pay more or less and require more or less power. That is significant, and is in strong favor for the HIGH end of graphics, in which TDFX is the leader.

A review of TDFX's business model reveals strokes of brilliance. Every graphics card out there can be enhanced with a Voodoo add in board. Every computer (pci or AGP) can be shipped with a Banshee board. Every V2 owner can upgrade to SLI. This is awesome! And it is why I hope that TDFX continues, for at least one more generation, to make the add in 3D only board, in addition to the Banshee. There is also a psychological game in effect. If you have a 2D-3D board there is a very good chance that you would choose to pay 200 bux for a 3D only board over a 200 dollar 2d/3d board that provided the same 3D, and perhaps better 2D than you currently have. Because people like to buy "the best" and don't like to buy redundant pieces (a 2D/3D card to replace a 2D/3D board).

Lets get back over 16!
