The Gateway 400MhZ machine that failed with 4.5 is used by a very computer literate programmer (not me). He designs very complex web sites using HTML and proprietary tools. Presently he checks all his efforts using Netscape 4.05 and IE 4.01. Netscape is his browser of choice and his preferred standard. However, everything he does must also work flawlessly on IE 4.01. Usually there are a few problems which are easily corrected.

However 4.5 was a real problem. It screwed up his OS and he reverted to 4.05.

I'm running a 166 MhZ system with a fast hard drive. I've had it for 2 1/2 years and it is no longer a screamer - the fast hard drive has helped. I use both IE 4.01 and Communicator 4.05 interchangeably. The default browser is IE4.01 - for no special reason. Both bring up the autodialer when selected from desktop and there is no problem opening with one and selecting another during on-line use.

I am posting this info as just that - info. My system is very solid with virtually no problems, just as the Gateway 400 with 4.05 and IE 4.01 is rock-solid (both are still win 95).

The statement about uninstalling 4.01 is correct. It can literally destroy your system. I did just that on a notebook (I reformatted the HD and started over - fortunately I do weekly backups. For those of you 'Netscape fanatics' that use both browsers, the safe way is to install a new version of IE over the old version. DON'T uninstall IE 4.0.

Both browsers have good features that the other doesn't. I personally find that the choice of browser is unimportant. For me, the content inside the browser is 98% of the issue.
