An interesting clip from Trident's earnings report:

"''On a more positive note, as 3D graphics continues to increase its market share, it is now trending down into the sub $1,000 PC segment. Trend-setting OEMs are no longer using that category to dump surplus inventory, but are seeing it as an opportunity to design machines to meet the fast rising demand from the segment. This is a significant event, and Trident is working directly with leading ISVs and OEMs to position itself as the first company to offer the complete 3D gaming experience for the sub-$1,000 PC by developing highly-integrated 3D solutions.''

I've been a long-time proponent of a low-cost PC gaming platform, one perhaps in between the proposed Sega Dreamcast Win CE machine and the current $2k Gateway/Dell PIIs. Just think of the large market for people who want good gaming machines but don't want to pay for the topped-out systems. I'm thinking Banshee + AMD K6-2/Intel Celeron. This is where 3dfx can really exert their brand name ... after all, the graphics chip is almost (if not more) important than the CPU for gaming people.

I disagree. Changing to a pre-announcing model of PR would only
indicate a lack of confidence in the upcoming/current product line.

If Voodoo II is selling well, and Rampage will release before
Voodoo II and Banshee sales begin to drop off too much, then
preannouncing will only make those sales drop further and faster.

OTOH, if Voodoo II sales are in the toilet and Rampage is late
you might as well preannounce and try to prevent buyers from going
over to other boards.

Keep it the way it is now, with _very_ little info on upcoming
product released.

Excellent article on why Intel will not win the 3-D wars at:

www.voodooextreme.com/3Fingers/3D_OverTime

In short - Intel is not and will not be able to really compete or outperform the competition in the 3D field - not even against S3 or Matrox, let alone TDFX. Intel is going to be an also ran at best, and will probably content itself with the very bottom end (low cost, low performance) of the market.

P.S. if anybody wants to tell me how to embed web addresses in my postings feel free to post instructions on how to do it.
