<< Yes, Xeons & fast PII's will help, but no one seems to be showing evidence that supports this point. >>

Hello Glenn,
I believe Xeons were just released. You will have to wait till the end of the next few Qs to get any sort of evidence. Thats the way things work.

<< we should expect to see some intense competition between all three x86'ers with IDT & maybe other jumping in to boot. >>

Competition is always intense. Has been for years. I recall that AMD just asked IBM to not produce chips now (as agreed before), because demand was not strong enough to support the demand. Please correct me if I am off. IDT...yes, I see there stuff all over the place. ;-)

You have an interesting curiosity about declining PC ASP sales in the commercial market. This has been an interesting topic for sometime. Another interesting topic is the 'nill' competition Intel has on the server and workstation side of things. Please correct me if I am off. Intel is speeding up their move to smaller geometries. I hope they do it as well as in the past!

am i sounding like Dr. Engel? I wish. ;-)

all imho

Glen,

If you think that Intel should have entirely converted its mpu product line to PII by now, you really don't know what you're talking about. The unit crossover point from Pentium MMX to PII occurred approximately in late March - which was right on schedule or a bit early.

Intel has repeatedly given guidance that they don't expect a complete transition to PII until the fourth quarter. This may take place a bit earlier; however, due to "gangbuster" yields.

Regards,

Doug

Glenn - Re: " First off, most people were counting on intc to shift entirely to PII by now (w/ the ??? high margins). "

Intel has been making essentially 100% Pentium II/P6/Celerons/Xeons wafers for over two months. Pentium MMX wafer starts were terminated at the end of Q198.

Current Pentium II shipments hit about 50% several months ago, ahead of Intel's schedule by about two months.

Re: " that estimates were for intc to be making $4.80 for '98. Do you
recall, how many times since then the numbers have been revised?"

They get revised all the time.

Intel's EPS is down - but still highly POSITIVE - PROFITABLE.

As for NSM - buy some more - it is on sale today.
