South Africa endorses additional sanctions against Unita

July 23, 1998

Johannesburg - The department of foreign affairs would like to draw the attention of South African citizens and the
business community operating from South Africa to the additional mandatory measures imposed by the Security
Council of the United Nations against Unita and its members in Angola.

The Security Council voted unanimously in favour of Resolution 1173 (1998) of June 12, 1998, by which financial
sanctions imposed upon Unita will see the investment accounts and property belonging to Unita or its senior
officials and adult members of their families being frozen.

Member-states, including South Africa, are also expected to prevent all official contacts with Unita leadership in
areas still controlled by the latter, as well as to prohibit the direct or indirect import from Angola to their territory of
all diamonds not controlled through the certificate of origin from the Angolan central diamond organisation
Endiama. Abovementioned sanctions are effective as from Wednesday, July 1, 1998, 00:01 and binding on
Member-States and their citizens.

Hello Goalie & Peter

***OFF TOPIC***

Yes watch it! I have been dinged twice by letting the tide drift me inside one of those boundaries. In one case I had a King hooked in the authorized zone and was fighting it inside the unauthorized zone. DFO made me release it anyway and issued a ticket.

Peter, showers all weekend and again today so hopefully fires are dampened. No smoke today and wind is from the fire direction.

I have to wonder how long it will be before SUF have to shut down in Angola. It is patently obvious that the government there has not been in real control for almost a year. There has been no will from them or the UN to put their boot on the necks of the smugglers and the organizations financing this whole mess.

I sense another regional conflict not just in Angola if the UN does not take significant steps very soon.

I can not help wondering if SUF is not using Executive Solutions to maintain security?

This is going to get worse and very quickly.

Regards
