<To stop ATT and other LD companies attempt to steal their local voice consumer and business customers>

From everything Ive read this is a good 5 years out if not much longer. The long distance companies are already complaining to the FCC about the recent happenings.

<To have a potential to package services similar to what ATT is promissing and doing, like single billing, discounts to those who subscribes to the package which includes: local telephone, local internet access, local cellular and local cable services>

Couldn't the RBOC's also do this w/ subsidiaries the Fcc is hinting @. Maybe something like BANI.

<On data side their position in this case is wait and see. If ADSL is spreading faster and is more cost effective they have an option to take this route, if cable is more cost effective, they switch in an instant.>

You have good points & I would only argue that cable services are farther out than what some hype might suggest plus voice is not offered over cable from many companies other than what T just bought. But, companies like Quest would work while keeping in mind that they are still building. I think this is why the RBOC's actually liked the AT&T merger. Its certain the RBOC's are in no hurry & w/ the current increase in revs from data services why would they be. Surely they see a threat & opportunity rolled up in one. On another note, aren't most cable companies private. I know the local cable company in my area has invested millions & are to finish things up @ a later date just as GTE has done for years now. They still won't be able to deliver unless the FCC says so as they are trying to become a CLEC & have no intentions of selling as they are family owned, operated, & still young. The cable companies might be a little harder to get than what one might think but then again most everything has a price. We will know more 6 months from August.
