An elementary question:
I just made my first short-term trade: jumped into DGII right after it announced disappointing earnings and had dipped a few points, then jumped out after riding it back up over the next week. After commissions I netted only $117. I know it's not a loss, but it's not much of a gain either.
My question is this: How does one compute the amount of money to invest in a short term play? And do you figure out beforehand what each fractional movement up or down means to your wallet?

Before I let too much time pass, I'd just like to say thanks to KJC, Mr. B, and Reginald Middleton for some very informative responses each in their own way. The "Beta" question has been a stumper for a long time.

On an evaluation basis, how would the thread (if interested) evaluate the following numbers for the purpose of a possible buy?

This is an actual stock, but I'll not list its symbol out of respect to my interpretation of KJC's thread heading post:

Current price - short of $3 a share.

Book value - $2.30

Price to Book - 1.30

ROA (Return on Assets) - -9.18%
ROE (Return on Equity) - -12.18%

Debt to Equity-most recent quarter - $0.00

Financial Strength-Current Ratio (mrq) - 3.27

Beta - 2.05

Market Capitalization - 68.5 mil.

This stock was one which had a high percentage move for the day about two weeks ago. I've been keeping it on my watch list, but have not bought in because of some concerns with its ROA and the ROE.

I'm curious, how does the rest of the thread and or future thread participants view the evaluation of this stock as a candidate for future addition to one's portfolio.

Note: Comments made will not effect my desire to buy or stay clear of this particular issue. I make my own decisions regarding any issue for future purchase.

I've got a lot more questions, btw.

Reginald,

I went to the New Media site for the link you provided, took the test (I won't be quitting my day job any time soon), clicked back and began to read the article. When I got to the bottom of the page, I clicked on "Continue to Next Page", but nothing happened.

Can you advise. I'd like to finish reading the article.
