><>...Hi tippet...><>

In my opinion tippet, the answer to you question is in your opening statement.

I have been praying for some time about the potential oppty to return to school and
get a PhD.

I believe God has answered that prayer. You got that oppty..He even provided the means for it (Scholarship)..As to the fleecing,it sometimes the only way we know for sure. But just don't keep fleecing. Risk is sometimes an integral part of faith, after all if there was no risk to it we wouldn't need faith in God.

Was not leaving your present job a part of the prayer?...Did you put any conditions on this request to God?
You may certainly be worth that wage you speak of, but is that really the question?
I don't know any of these answers tippet, but you do, and only you can be the final judge as to what God is presenting to you. And I trust that you will finally decide the path that God has chosen.

Consider Gideon.

Have a blessed day tippet
Shalom...><>

Dear Tippet.

I see no problem with asking God to help you decide in this way. Remember when Abrahams servant was sent to find Issac a wife. The way he asked the Lord to show him is similar IMO to the way you have asked.

Gen 24:13 Behold, I stand [here] by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:

Gen 24:14 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: [let the same be] she [that] thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.

Gen 24:15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.

This is only my opinion my brother and you should seek the counsel of others. I do believe that if you in your heart turn it over to God he will direct you and the choice you make will not surprise him. It is your heart he judges and he will make your decision work for you because he is a loving father and wants the best for you.

Let me know how you decide. I will pray for you about this decision.

In Yeshua's love for you - DLL

PS. The Disciples use of casting lots is also relevant IMHO. The key is being willing to follow the answer that you get.

I believe the real question should be:
Why do you want the PHd?

Make your lists.
Then and only then should you move on to the question you asked.

Your welcome.

My two cents worth:

<<Do you think it would be wrong to pray and ask God to provide the direction through this circumstance, i.e. if it is a place I should go let the counter-offer be accepted -- if it is not a place I should not go let the offer be rejected?>>

Only if you are certain that the counter-offer reflects God's will for your life. For example, if the counter offer (which I assume is for more money) is absolutely necessary for you to pay back a loan, to adequately (not extravagantly) support your family or to meet other commitments then it may be within God's will for your life since God would have us meet these commitments. However, if the counter-offer is based on pride, a desire to maintain a lifestyle beyond that which is necessary to obtain your PhD or some similar motive then it may be wrong to base your decision on the employer meeting your counter-offer. Don't forget that each person has free will and the employer's decision of whether to meet your demands may have nothing to do with God's will. You must ask yourself whether YOUR motives for making the counter-offer were within God's will and then let the employer's decision affect you based on that analysis.

Best of luck.

In Christ, Tom
