Now, John, it never mattered before how IDC was counting. Now all of the sudden it does, just because Eckhart's toupee got knocked off by Michael Dell.

IDC and Dataquest measure sales in (as Jim Kelley was so kind to point out). Since CPQ was clearing 16 weeks of inventory down to 4, they sold out (unmeasured by IDC) 12 weeks of inventory. Dell has no channel so sales out = sales in for them. Based on this, CPQ's sales out numbers (sales from the channel to customers) had to be a lot more than their sales in number, and could have been as much as twice as much. I'll see if any CPQ sales people have the sales out numbers. which should have been pretty good given the lowball pricing they were doing. I think 3Q will tell the tale but I would guess that CPQ sold out about twice as much as Dell, they usually do. Too bad this was revenue CPQ collected in 4Q97...
