I am really surprised at the daily activity. Was this an occasion of "sell on the news?" Surely, a sequel to a real money maker starring the son of the moneymaker should inspire a higher price! At this rate, no news is better .... any ideas on what gives?

Want to invest in Warner Bros.? The weekend "Lethal Weapon 4" opened, an article headlined "Do Stars' Deals Pose a `Lethal' Risk to Studios?" by Claudia Eller and James Bates of the LA Times was printed in the local newspaper. According to the authors, "Lethal" will have to make $300 million at the worldwide boxoffice to earn a respectable return for the studio. Production costs are $120-135 million, and worldwide marketing costs are $50 million. Perhaps one thinks that blowing things up is what drives up costs. Actually blowing things up is not that expensive in the world of movies. But big-name stars, directors, and producers who get substantial "back end" deals are expensive. Star Mel Gibson usually gets $20 million against 20% of the studio's gross earnings, director-producer Donner $6 million against 10%, and producer Silver $1.5 million against 5%. And there are still more multi-million dollar earners in the film! Videocassette sales are where the studio has its best chance to eventually turn a profit.

Something to chew on while we wait. Regards, Suzanne
