>>NEW Matrox DRIVERS for Win '98 No longer Beta. Try the new drivers out and see if the multimonitor set-up is more stable.<<

I just spent the last several hours fighting Win98.

1) The automatic..(plug and play) Win98 features kept cancelling out the Matrox installation during the final reboot. I finally disabled the second monitor in Win98 and then the Matrox installation finished.

2) The Matrox cards are using IRQ 11 and the Turtle Beach PCI sound card is also using IRQ 11 in my system. I have an available IRQ 5 so I tried changing the IRQ's. The device manager said no go on both cards.

I disabled the sound card to ensure no IRQ conflict.

3) The multimonitor setup still does not work properly. The second monitor (5 yr old +/- NEC MultiSync 3FGx ) shows the windows desktop and the mouse moves around and I can move windows to the screen but it does not redraw properly. Sometimes it will only redraw half a window..it leaves gaps and ghosts. (It works fine as a stand alone monitor)

My guess is Win 98 or old Nec monitor before Matrox drivers is the problem in my setup.

So far Win 98 has been a waste of time for me. It looks like my own upgrade path will be from Win 95 to NT. I do not think Microsoft will put a lot of development into WIN98 as it is end of the line software. It seems hit or miss with the multimonitor thing. A pretested system may be worth the investment. I would suggest NT compatible components however as we all may end up in NT.

I can see some potential problems in the future of multimonitor cards. With support in Win 98 and NT the market will dry up. The only advantage will be saving PCI slots. This is naturally a significant advantage if one wants four monitors. One must consider the smaller market for the cards. These manufacturers may have trouble going forward.

My thoughts trend towards NT. I am looking for a good reason to change. Actually I believe Bill is making this decision for us.
