Dazzle Multimedia and Partners in Europe to Distribute Digital Video Products Overseas
Business Wire - July 28, 1998 09:18

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 28, 1998--

Lower Prices and New Distribution Partnership Demonstrate

Video Pioneer's Commitment to Five European Countries

Dazzle Multimedia Tuesday announced that the growing European PC user base that wants to explore the capabilities of MPEG digital video soon will be able to purchase the industry leader's current line of affordable desktop video capture/editing products thanks to a new distribution agreement with Partners In Europe (PIE).

Under the exclusive agreement, PIE -- the largest Pan European Manufacturer Representative Company representing many technology companies including Andrea Electronics, Visiontek, Nexar and Systemsoft -- will distribute and market the company's Dazzle, an external plug-in adapter, and Snazzi, an internal 1/2 slot PCI card, to PC users in the United Kingdom, France, Benelux, Scandinavia and Germany.

In addition to marketing support, PIE soon may stock the product in Europe and, beginning in August, will provide toll-free, live technical support within Europe for all of Dazzle Multimedia's products.

"International demand for MPEG desktop video products is skyrocketing," said Jack Battaglia, vice president of sales, Dazzle Multimedia. "Our partnership with Partners In Europe will allow us to capitalize on this opportunity and actually lower our prices because we don't have the additional expense of opening sales offices abroad."

"We're very excited to partner with Dazzle to provide their advanced MPEG technology throughout Europe, the fact that they plan to stock the product locally and are providing toll-free technical support demonstrates their commitment to the European market," said Kieran Sheahan, president of Partners In Europe.

Availability

European PC users who want MPEG desktop video capabilities can purchase either Dazzle or Snazzi from their local Retailer/Var/Vad in the coming weeks.

Partner companies working with PIE gain the unique advantage of having their products sold in their own name by a group of experienced, multilingual, local professionals, without the expensive overhead costs of having to set up their own European subsidiary operation.

From its initial set up location in Belgium, PIE made the move to Shannon, Ireland in August 1996 and now maintains its European headquarters there. Sales offices are located in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Benelux and Spain.

Pay-tv company British Digital Broadcasting change their name to ONdigital
The digital terrestrial pay TV service will be called ONdigital when it launches its 15 channels in the autumn.
The change of name by British Digital Broadcasting is the first step in the company's œ40 million push to establish its brand and convince viewers to subscribe.

ONdigital believes it can double the current pay TV market to 12 million subscribers - or about half the population.

Fully integrated digital televisions capable of receiving all the terrestrial services would be launched this autumn, the company said.

Viewers will be able to get existing free channels BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, as well as some new channels such as BBC News 24, BBC Choice and ITV2 without having to subscribe.

ONdigital will offer 15 more channels under subscription from suppliers including BBC and Flextech, Carlton, Granada and BSkyB, which will show sport, films, lifestyle, music, documentaries, education and children's programmes.

But ONdigital will not announce its full channel line-up and pricing until September.

Chief executive Stephen Grabiner said: "Our research shows there is a high dissatisfaction with existing pay TV operators."

"We know that people want more choice and are prepared to pay for it, but they also want to be valued."

"ONdigital will be the best way to get the best television - more choice of channels and services at the right price, with better quality sound and pictures - all through a TV aerial."

BSkyB plans its own digital platform launch of around 150 channels on satellite this summer, with a big marketing push in time for Christmas.
