are you sure ?
Well, I prefer the following view to yours (source
Time Man of of the year )

"His character traits are emblematic of this amazing
century: a paranoia buried from his having been
a refugee from the Nazis and then the Communists: an
entrepreneurial optimism instilled as an immigrant to a
land brimming with freedom and opportunity: and a
a sharpness tinged with arrogance that comes from being
a brilliant mind on the front line of a revolution"

Because this is what's all about,
as far as I am concerned, dear Mary:

entrepreneurial optimism and a brilliant mind.

Mind you, I have nothing against Craig.
(and I am still LONG on Intel :-)

But I also know what means being a foreigner,
even though the place where I am is quite far from being
"a land brimming with freedom and opportunity" :-)

Maybe in America "not understanding of a slap on the back
and wink of the eye" is a great sin. May be.

Maybe that's why another great manager of the like
of Mory Ejabat of Ascend Communications appears to
take the second seat. (and the stock got hammered
last year
for reasons similar to what you indicate )

In the "hall of fame " of the Boston computer museum Mory's portrait isn't there (shame ) but make no mistake :
Jerry Sander's and Bob Palmer's portraits ARE there ...

I believe (and because I am a "foreigner" for ever , I have
to keep believing it )

that at the end of the day it's not "the slap on the back and
wink of the eye"; rather it's the satisfied customers
and the problems you solve what matters.
