IMO one of 2 things both of which are based on my belief the merger is the next big event;

1. he's was either going to lose what he had or
2. he couldn't get what he wanted

With the first real signs of progress i.e. NIH and NY plus the confirmations from Logica and Keane that the product is for real it strikes me as not the time to walk unless he wanted more of a future and/or position with the merged "entity" or thought a merger would dilute what he had. Either way I'm sorry to see him go.
You may think he walked away because he didn't see much of a future and that's fine. I don't . IMO the demand for MD's product is just beginning, definitely late, but still there, and the panic the overall problem will produce hasn't even begun.
