Jim, a reasonable correlation exists between CPU shortages and the subsequent appearance of the next generation as manufacturers attempt to reduce inventories on stale parts. There is also a loose correlation between Intel price reductions and competitor's impending product announcements. The combination of both events implies a reasonable chance that a competitor, mostly likely AMD, will deliver advanced CPUs around the revised Mendocino release date.

BTW, I determined how a K6 could beat a PII in my performance test. The benchmark code I used created 1MB arrays for the search and sort tests. Since the K6 mobo had a full MB of cache, it had an easier time than the PII with only 512K. So much for benchmarks :-(
