Chip,

There is a point to this towards the bottom regarding Intel but the beginning of this post is decidedly Off-Topic:

I agree with you on the two types of FPS players.

Quake Arena is where it's at. I'd sum up the two types of FPS'ers as those who like to play with others and those who, well, like to play with themselves. ;-) No offense of course.

I have high expectations for Quake Arena. There is no need for Id to spend time on monster AI. Your enemy will be a person who is just as intelligent and cunning as you are. Imagine what reinvesting those AI energies into a team concept will yield. Yippee!! It's gonna rock.

RE: Sin. I'm downloading it now. Your concerns regarding balanced damages is interesting. For a more balanced damage scheme check out Action Quake. It is based on Action Movies and has some good things going for it. It has stolen my usually allotted CTF playtime. I think it's damn cool. (Notice the rather blocky graphics, then notice how much fun you're having ;-)

On topic:

I thought I had posted this earlier but now my post seems to be AWOL. I heard that PCMagazine was preparing to do (had done?) a lavish write up on Aureal sound cards. They touted them as the best thing to hit Computing in quite some time. Aureal is definitely targeting gamers, how can PCmag miss the TDFX boat? Are they that stupid to think that we'll need 3D audio before we'll need fleshed out 3D graphics?

And while you're there, check out this interesting article. I think this clearly points to why Intel invested in Evans & Sutherland. "It's the business market stupid."

Shame on PCMagazine for not at least mentioning the other application of OpenGL (games) and it's shining star (TDFX).

Then, if you've really got some time on your hands, check out this forum on the longevity of Quake II. It's posts from the everyman on why QII rules the roost. Notice the recurring theme? Graphics.

Regards,
Stuart

Re: FPS Buckets

"All Category 1 deathmatcher FPS players -- raise your hand!"

<PX raises hand>

Nice analysis, Chip. Clearly there's a large intersection of the two sets, but also just as obvious is that most players do lean heavily one way or the other.

Since Doom II I've been moving farther and farther toward Cat 1.

I thought Unreal was boring. <g> But I'm looking forward to good Unreal DM. <g>
