John, Please understand that Jesus was on earth to fulfill Jewdaism and prophesy to his people. We as Gentiles were far away and lost as far as the covenant was concerned. Jesus even told his people to follow what the priests told them.
Paul tells us that we do not know Jesus after the flesh but we worship him in spirit.
The mystery of Grace was not given until God suspended his program with Israel and raised up Paul as an apostle. Paul is the Gentile apostile and he by revelation first introduced the Mystery of Grace, the unsearchable riches of Christ. Unsearchable because there was nothing foretold about this dispensation of grace. A mystery because although God knew it before the world was formed, no one else did until Paul.
It might help you to know that Paul's epistles were in print before the 4 gospels.
Regards,
Santiago

"As such I see it remaining still as the schoolmaster to bring us to Christ as it is not possible to keep the law."

The law of God is holy and perfect. It was not the law of God that was at fault, but man.
Ancient Israel was the representative of mankind, a kind of spiritual school. They were far above the other nations of men in spirituality and morality, but yet fell far short of the righteouness of God. There obedience was based upon an obedience of compulsion.
It demonstrated that man could not obey the law in his fallen state.
Man is born spiritually dead. (By one man sin came into the world, and through sin death regined upon all men.)
Under the new covenant, God recreates man's spirit through faith in Christ and man again becomes a "living soul". Through Christ, we are now the sons of God with the laws of God written on our recreated hearts. We continue to possess that treasure of a Born Again spirit in our tabernacles of clay. This tabernacle of clay, our flesh, continues to pull us towards the world as our recreated spirit desires to do the will of God. (Rom. 7)
