I agree, Puma. These are not competitors.

I shouldn't have used that term. Perhaps "substitutions"
might have been more precise. Going after the same
market (extremely broadly defined), but their products
aren't strictly competitive. Portico is truly
in a different class.

Have you heard of an offering from Nuance that could compete with Portico?

I spoke to someone from Ball Atlantic yesterday and they said demos from both Nuance and Portico looked very good. They also had some internal projects.

But somehow I think there could be some confusion here. People who are not directly involved can get products mixed up. Do you know of anything from Nuance that we should be aware of? Nuance has some impressive products for customer call centers which is another very hot area worth investigation. These offerings vary from simply receptionist replacements to systems that handle more complicated customer transactions.

It was interesting to hear that Sears catalog services cut it's staff of operators from3000 to 80 (this is from memory).

Regards,

Mark

PS Just for fun, if you want to try MIT's Jupiter Weather Information that is a test system for SR, the number is 1-888-573-8255

<<All provide competition in a broad sense in that they are going after the same market and therefore fighting over the same dollars. >>

none
of them are competitors
with the exception of wildfire:
sierra, you are absolutely right...

however...
these alternative services will
siphon dollars otherwise earmarked
for a personal assistant to pay for
services whose resemblance to portico
may best be seen through obfuscation.....

VUI...agent technology...
the critical differences setting portico apart
must be actually invoked ( in my opinion) for
most consumers to understand.
the roles of
saatchi, the VARs, the sales force, the pr firm...
all of them are charged in one way or another
with making that access an inevitability.
