SmartMedia ... not so smart? Not backward compatible?!?!?!?

Hey look at this. Can someone verify this?
Its the best news I have heard with regard to the Smart Media. :-)

SmartMedia ... not so smart?
This info was gathered off of rec.photo.digital today and confirms my
fears about SmartMedia in general. For all of you out there that have
been impatiently awaiting larger SmartMedia cards for your existing
digicams - it's pretty much bad news as I had predicted well over a year ago.

I had questioned the design of SmartMedia when I first saw it come on
the market for the very reasons that have now been confirmed by
Olympus themselves. I don't want my memory cards to be "brainless"
blobs of flash memory. Give me a CompactFlash card with its own
embedded controller and firmware. I don't want that stuff built into my digicam only to find out that it cannot be upgraded as larger capacity products become available. Imagine your Nikon 900 being stuck with nothing bigger than an 8MB CF card!

I guess this pretty much solves the "Beta vs VHS" war in the compact
memory world for digicams. Now you know why the vast majority of
manufacturers opted for CompactFlash in most all of the new megapixel
cameras this year -- sorry Toshiba, but we're not buying it anymore...

From: Kenneth Hong <HongK@olympus.com>
"The 16 meg SmartMedia cards (and larger) will not work on any Olympus digital camera other than the new D-340L. There have been architechural changes made within the SmartMedia that do not make them backwards compatible. Your [D-600L] camera cannot be modified to use SmartMedia cards larger than 8 meg. The MA-1U PC Card Adapter will also not work with 16 meg SmartMedia for the same reason.
