Steven:Jolo's is, alas, no more... Yes, I heard it burned to the ground. Torched, perhaps, by some disgruntled patron who got a bad balut one drunken night. Our boy Ferdie, the best friend the Philippine Communist Party ever had. Not according to the REAL communist rebels in the south. But then, Communism was always a handy platform from which would-be tyrants can spout slogans.I introduced myself as a Canadian for a few months after that... I did the same in Britain after tensions with Libya (and later, Iraq) escalated to the point where terrorist threats gained some very real credibility. In Northern Ireland, though, I was always an American. As for the immorality and the perjury, well, extramarital sex is something everybody lies about. But they don't lie about it under oath .The question is why anybody asked the question. In most countries, people would ask no questions and hear no lies. The question is being asked because it's the one with the best evidence to the contrary. We've always suspected that Clinton was disingenuous; too many of his tales (such as claiming to watch black churches burn when he was a child, his semantic denial of an affair with Gennifer Flowers, his artful dodge on the topic of his drug use in college) don't square with other accounts. Empirical evidence suggests that he's a compulsive liar and will lie about anything, even when the truth is much more plausible and serves his purpose as well. Logically, once it's established that Clinton has lied under oath about something so inconsequential as an affair, it stands to reason that he will also lie about issues much more important. His motive for lying is likely to increase along with the gravity of the situation. He also has a history of redefining terms to suit his agenda. Remember the 1992 "tax the rich" campaign rhetoric? After he was elected it turns out that the "rich" have a gross income of $30,000 or more. Needless to say, a lot of folks were very surprised to learn that they were suddenly, by presidential declaration, rich. And it's been widely reported that Clinton does not consider oral sex to be adulterous. Try explaining that one to your significant other.... I hope the GOP can come up with a candidate that is neither a fossil nor a villain next time around. I don't see the reference to a villain. But I hope we have at least one candidate with the fiduciary acumen of Steve Forbes, the charisma of Bill Clinton, the morals of Bill Bennett, the inspirational leadership of Teddy Roosevelt, the negotiating power of Ronald Reagan, the compassion of Jimmy Carter, and the dedicated committment of Abraham Lincoln. Hey, I can dream, can't I? RS
