Re: DSLAMs

DenverTechie or Frank,
From what I recall, a DSLAM is something that can be popped right into a telco's CO, so that telco can offer xDSL services to their customers.
1. Did I get this right?
2. Can you tell me who is the leader in making DSLAMs?
Thanks,
MikeM(From Florida)

Re: Another Huge Cable Investment

Thread,
With Craig Mcaw(sp?)investment of $1/2 billion and Bill Gates $1.5 billion and now Paul Allen's $4.5 billion investments in different cable companies, no wonder I'm thinking HFC is the most viable last mile solution. Three of the most wealthy men in the world are betting a lot of money on getting us all connected with HFC networks. I don't imagine they are putting all this money into the cable companies without plans for doing a two-way HFC upgrade.

Paul Allen to buy private Charter for $4.5 billion
ST. LOUIS, July 30 (Reuters) - Investor Paul Allen said Thursday he agreed to buy St. Louis-based Charter Communications, a privately held cable operator, for $4.5 billion.

The company will be integrated into Allen's other cable investment, Marcus Cable, creating the seventh largest cable operator in the United States. Allen, a communications industry investor and a co-founder of Microsoft Corp., said the price represents 14 times the company's projected 1999 operating cash flow.

The purchase is another move by Allen to invest in what he calls a ''wired world'', combining new media, entertainment and technology companies. He said it is his largest personal investment to date.

"This investment marks another step forward in my Wired World strategy, which is a connected future marked by the merger of high-bandwidth data channels, the power of the personal computer and the availability of valuable content,"' Allen said.
