WCOM earnings suprise, Successful buy of Brazilian telecom infrastructure, MCIC earnings suprise... if the market downdraft abates, does anyone here see a reason that WCOM will not move up to 60 in Aug, especially with merger approval pending??

Here's a good one: praise MCI WorldCom while politely bashing AT&T
(BTW: thanks Anthony, AVANT and others for making this the most informative thread on SI)

Schroder Analyst: MCI, WorldCom Merger Would Be Potent Mix

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The planned merger of MCI Communications
Corp. (MCIC) and WorldCom Inc. (WCOM) is likely to yield a powerful
combination, according to Schroder & Co. telecommunications analyst
Philip Sirlin.

Sirlin told CNBC Thursday that he sees the merger packaging MCI's
customer base with WorldCom's aggressiveness and local access for large
customers.

"You put that all together, we might really finally see some real competition
for the local service business of large customers," he said.

MCI expects to close its merger with WorldCom in the third quarter. The
merger is awaiting approval from the Federal Communications Commission
and three U.S. states.

On another telecom front, Sirlin called the planned joint venture between
AT&T Corp. (T) and British Telecommunications PLC (BTY) "significant,"
saying he feels the two companies are positioning themselves for complete
access to each other's networks and the ability to better structure
international offerings.

AT&T and British Telecommunicatons unveiled plans for a global joint
venture to provide international voice and data services to multinational
corporations and to serve as a wholesaler to other telecommunications
companies.

However, Sirlin does not recommend AT&T stock, citing expected
near-term competition in long-distance business and the expenses involved
in entering cable and other new businesses.

"I think we're going to have relatively unattractive earnings over the next
one, two or three years," from AT&T, Sirlin said.
