Frank, I've done some research on the DSL "multiplexer" vs. "concentrator" issue.

It appears that most of the primary systems I looked at are intended to be of the "concentrator" variety, stressing the routing functions you described as frame-contention-concentrators, bowing to the pressures of IP based networks. However, there are many out there describe their DSL networks in terms of the cell-switched-muxes using the ATM fabric as you describe. Alcatel continues to describe the DSL architecture this way.

As far as I can tell, there is not a distinction taking hold in the industry, and both physical units are interchangeably called DSLAMs. This leads to some nomenclature confusion by journalists and pundits regarding DSL. It is my contention that we need to study the network architecture of a given supplier offering to determine the "type" of DSLAM being offered. At the present time, both are being considered under the generic term DSLAM.
