Hello Paul, > Is NDS on Internet time??? Well, a couple weeks back I demonstrated logging in to a NetWare v5 server over the public Internet (something that I have been doing since Jan/Feb) and then creating users ... also showing immediate LDAP access to those users. With NetWare v5 NetWare and NDS offer all of the power and capability in a pure IP environment. This has taken time, but the foundation is now in place. Anyone familiar with the old NetWare is amazed to watch this ... Also, there will continue to be an evolution of the core NDS ... good things are coming! > I'm very curious as to what if anything NDS provides to the > Enterprise in an intranet or Internet context? I think that the core value offered today (and with NetWare v5) will be in Directory-Based Management. When you combine BMASS (RADIUS remote access management) with our DNS/DHCP services (DNS naming, dynamic DNS, and DHCP IP address management) then BorderManager (ability to provide Intra/Internet access control using rules and user restrictions) and finally ZENWorks (workstation and desktop management) what you have is a network infrastructure which is able to automate and integrate a lot of management. All of these products are based around the directory and often the user. Novonyx products are also directory enabled ... All of this is providing a lot of value for the network owner, or the administrator. These services can be utilized by a corporation or an ISP ... but ... What you seem to be looking at is the user value. Much of the user's experience when interacting with these products is very transparent. I log in. I really don't realize that my world and perspective has been molded, configured, restricted, or enhanced by the directory. There is a lot of room for some new ideas and products which allow the *user* to better utilize the directory. Yes, there are people that are actively exploring this ... > You are aware of the use of Internet search engines to create > portals into the internet, what are the portals into the Enterprise > world provided by NDS? Are there any NDS based search engines? Has > anyone at Novell looked beyond the rhetoric to think seriously > about what people can do with NDS in an Internet context? ;-) Yes ... I am well aware of the evolving environment of search engines, indexes, and portals ... and have been following them closely. (As a side note, remember that I stated that "The Internet is the developing nervous system of the human organism on earth!" ... well before the Microsoft advertisements!) As a follow on, I believe that these "portals" are the beginning of the fourth step of biological evolution ... the creation of a "brain" ... the focus of a wide range of "events" and storage (memory). Also a place that many people (cells) look to for information and guidance ... ;-) I don't know of any NDS powered search engines today ... but I do agree that you are on the right track. I still believe that Directories will become a more important part of our lives than the web. Yes ... there are people at Novell who are seriously looking at Novell, NetWare, NDS, BorderManager, and other products in an Internet context. I will not be able to comment on much since I am actively involved in this from time to time. As NetWare v5 ships, I think you'll start to see many new ways that NetWare can be used on the Internet ... keep your eyes open ... ;-) Thanx for the list of links ... there were a couple that I hadn't seen yet!
