Let's change the subject. Haven't we thrashed that old argument over and over for the last 2 years.

Eric's new board members sound terrific. Reed Hunt fresh from the FCC, spectrum auctions, deregulation, ... Wow! Does he have connections. Telephony partners for Netware. Bandwidth partners. International partners.

Bill Joy, CTO from Sun. Eric surely picked this one himself. They must have worked together for a decade or more. Jini. Technology partnerships. Novell / Sun connection strengthening. ...

Help me see some more possibilities with these new choices. In the old days we heard so much complaining about the make-up of the board. Now we need to rejoice and imagine the possibilities from these changes.

Hi Fred:

Well maybe I made a mistake in trying to "UNZIP" Mr. MZIP last week, in terms of consuming a bit of my personal time on someone who's trying to ruffle the feathers of those bullish on Novell's prospects going forward.

Nonetheless, I will make brief and strategic efforts to try and point out information on Novell as unbiased as possible. I respect the power, size, and marketing girth of Microsoft, yet I'm equally respectful of the drive, determination, and creative energy of Dr. Schmidt and his team at Novell.

Just as a heads up for those not picking up the latest Investor's Business Daily for Monday, August 3 (comes out Saturday on newstands), there is a full page article in the Computer and Technology section by Lisa Wirthman (she's covered MSFT and NOVL articles in the past, with a bit of a bias against NOVL in earlier articles) titled "Novell Beating Microsoft To The Year 2000 Punch". Lisa's article is articulate and unbiased in describing Novell's upcoming launch of Netware 5.0. I'll try to cut and paste from the electronic version that will be available Monday morning.

Here are a few quotes from both Novell people and Microsoft......

"Netware 5.0 is the realization of all the things that have happened over the last 12 months" said Stewart Nelson, vice president of Novell Products Group in Orem, Utah.

Ironically, helping Novell is an unexpected boost from Microsoft.

Microsoft's competing Windows NT 5.0 software has been delayed several times, and now is expected next summer.

Microsoft President Steve Ballmer dismisses the idea that his company is handing Novell a big opportunity <<NSS, its Schmidt that handing NW5 and NDS to MSFT!!>> "I don't think it's going to make much of a diffference in terms of market share if they have something out in September and we have something out...whenever after that", he said. "There's a problem with the year 2000, but that's a problem for everybody."

<<Can you believe that quote??? I mean, what he's basically saying is that Novell has the solutions to "everybody's year 2000 problem" if I read between the lines correctly. For some reason he feels that 9 to 12 months of lead time by Novell isn't a "problem". Hmmm, this is getting very, very, interesting. Where's Joe Antol? Joe, you've got to sense what is going to happen over the next few months, eh? >>

Regards,

QuadK

<<Billy Bobs dancing on two platforms: politics and technology. My guess is they are in bed together and will go down together.>>

Ahh, but Fred, the last time Clinton was in California he slept at Steve Jobs' house! Anyway, I'm pleased to have no Microsoft products on my computer and I can get away with that since I only need a word processor and a web browser from Netscape.

I've got a small position in NOVL right now and am pretty sure we at least go to $13.50 by NW 5.0 shipdate. Hoping to see some robust earnings for once. .40 in 1999 doesn't seem like enough to get us to $20.

From the News.Com article today about NT 5.0:

<<Gartner predicted the software giant will not deliver a beta
"appropriate for full-function testing purposes" until the second
quarter of next year when it ships the third beta in what was
originally scheduled to be a two-beta process. The consultant
advises that users should continue to purchase proven operating
system software such as NT 4.0 with the appropriate service
packs, Novell's NetWare, and flavors of Unix.>>
