I see nothing wrong for Eric to admit to the mistakes about the USRX deal. USIS spent more than 10 years making the Borroughs-Sperry Univac deal work. It was very painful. I saw Sperry's employees buying in at 60+, while I was able to get them at 2 1/2! They were burdened with debts while busy getting the marriage to work. While you can get an OEM pnp v90 modem for $50 bucks working beautifully at 50.3K, I don't see any benefit coms would have to keep the modem business unless it can get into a technology that is 5 years ahead from the competitors and make it a standard! I doubt that coms can go alone on that, however. Some telecomm companies, such as LU, or computer companies, IBM, HWP, or CPQ for that matter, must play a role to make it happen. I believe the next phase of telecomm consolidation will be computer / network / telcomm giga-merger. I don't know where coms will be at that time compared with csco. Is ASND an example going in that direction though?
