Actually I'm not so certain you cannot....at least, in the SEC's view.

I think it's the firm that prevents you. For example, one firm may say a $5 stock is marginable but another may say a $4 one is.

A smaller firm may also not be able to borrow a low priced stock to short, or may not wish to. I know from experience I could not short nor use as margin a small stock while "next door" I could.

But in general I agree it's hard to short a pink stock....it's always a wild remark when you see a penny thread decrying other SI posters as shorters as if the community is made up of MMs on the box selling into waves of knowledgeable pink sheet bulls.
