Paul Engel, re:<Why is it always the negative opinions that you dwell on.>
I happen to think Lehman's right on this one. Some month's ago I said much the same thing on this thread. Lehman's also been relatively accurate on quarterly earnings forecasts over the past year or more, and they currently have FY'98 under $3.00.
No one has been very accurate forecasting beyond six months. (Last October the street had Intel at '98 = $4.69 and '99 = $5.30). So the investor has to do his own long range estimating based on whatever info he can glean from published data, etc.
You only find the positive, and lately it's been that Intel's problems are bad for AMD. Why not address the situation relative to Intel, forget AMD. They aren't going away, so I assume their constant reaction to Intel's pricing will just continue the price war. These parts are being introduced at very low prices. If Intel follows the normal learning curve, don't you think that Celeron-A/333 will be priced under $150 in Q1? (The Celeron- A/300 will probably be under $100 eventually). And if these chips become very popular, won't they drive down revenues, earnings and margins? (Especially if they gain large market share in the office?)
I'd be interested in your cost estimates for Celeron-A. That's the kind of data that can help figure out the margins now and in the future. And if you have any data as to the success of these chip's that would also be helpful.
Your positive spin on low-ball pricing has always been that it hurt's AMD. Anything that hurt's AMD is positive to you, regardless of what it means to Intel. Let's figure out what it means to Intel? Even if it means poking a stick in your eye now and then. ;-)
