If you listened on last quarter's conference call, Diamond Multimedia is definitely planning a Banshee card.

Jeff, just to throw in another possibility - TDFX/OEMs are waiting for Banshee yields to improve before going into mass production.

Anyway, considering the recent market environment, TDFX is performing in line with the sector. :-(

Jeff, Thanks for trying to keep it objective. I've been concerned about the lack of Banshee announcements, even though I fully expect every major card maker who makes a V2 card to make VB card as well. Last week I was on the phone with 3Dfx and asked them about lack of Banshee announcements. The guy I talked with got a bit defensive about the topic but had no satisfactory explanations. (I asked why are the OEMs and/or card makers hesitant to announce Banshee support, he said what makes you think they are hesitant, I said lack of the announcements so far, he said DIMD said that they would (very old news), I agreed and said that announcement lacked detail, he agreed but said nothing else). I don't expect an announcement from OEMs until at least mid-September. So lack of announcement from them does not bother me much. The card makers are a different story. One would think that given that V2 cards are their best selling and most profitable item, the card makers would go out of their way to keep 3Dfx as a happy partner. Can anyone speculate as to why a card maker may prefer to support nvid or siii instead? Do those products provide better margins or something?

As for 0.25u process, the main advantage is that it will bring the costs lower and allow faster speeds at cooler temperatures. As soon as 3Dfx can pull it off, they should.

I don't know enough about AGP to know if a 1x chip set can be converted to a 2x chip set. Perhaps someone can shed some light on this. My question is this though, if you were going to buy a graphics card, would you be more persuaded by the technical jargon on the box (z-buf, alpha blending, fog,... AGP 2X) or would you be better persuaded by a comparative benchmark showing this card to be better than its competition?

Conspiracy Theory II

Gateway today had what appeared to be a press release on their site dated 8/3 that announced the Voodoo 2 as an option on their G series model. The G series is their home PC model as opposed to the Rendition which is the ultra high end - hook it up to a tv - for only the people with money to burn model. Waited for the press release to appear on Business Wire under Gateway - never came. No one picked up on it here so I figured I'd post the link. Actually sent myself an e-mail from work with the link so I wouldn't have to look twice. Checked the link and lo and behold, the article wasn't there anymore! However, the G series configuration does show the Voodoo 2 as the default selection on the two high end G models - you can get a $240 lower price by not including it and the gaming package. So what happen? I think there's a vicious little internet gremlin that's prowling the web in search of all things TDFX. I don't think that you actually have a chance of seeing it without 3D acceleration but I'm told that you have to be using DirectX 'cause it eats up all the Glide drivers it finds. The world as we know it is in danger and its' time to call on the courageous knights of the SI round table to go on a quest in search of the Promised Banshee Board that will heal all wounds and forever restore peace through out 3Dfx land.

Good Luck All! Joe C.

Jeff, are you sure DZ said Banshee by end of August...

The reason I'm asking is because I can't find one boardmaker shipping in that timeframe. Is it possible he meant the chip and not the board?
