TOKYO (Nikkei)-Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co. will begin testing
next-generation cellular phone technology, using the North American
standard for key equipment, in March 1999, company sources said.

Japan's leading international telecommunications company began
research on the wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA)
system, the next generation standard in Europe and Japan, in July. The
company plans to enter the advanced cellular phone business in fiscal
2000, thus necessitating the research.

KDD plans to begin testing a prototype system using the North American
CDMA2000 standard for core cellular phone equipment next spring.
The company is considering procuring parts for the tests from Motorola
Inc., Lucent Technologies Inc. and other concerns.

The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications will allow a maximum of
three carriers to offer next-generation cellular phone services in a
given area. KDD is expected to tie up on such services with Nippon Idou
Tsushin Corp., affiliated with Toyota Motor Corp. (7203), which
advocates applying the North American standard.
