AT&T, Others Sign Agreement to Build Japan-U.S. Cable System

San Francisco, Aug. 3 (Bloomberg) -- AT&T Corp., British Telecom Plc, Japan Telecom Co. and other telecommunications companies signed an agreement to build a $1 billion undersea fiber-optic cable between the U.S. and Japan.

The 13,000-mile (21,000-kilometer) link, called Japan-US Cable Network, was first announced in May. It will be completed by the middle of 2000, the companies said. After a planned expansion, it would be the highest-capacity cable in the region, able to handle the equivalent of 7.74 million simultaneous voice calls, the companies said.

Thirty-three companies signed the agreement and are investing in the project.

The cable will connect from Ibaraki, Shima and Maruyama in Japan to Kahe Point in Hawaii to San Luis Obispo and Point Arena in California, the companies said.

Alcatel Alsthom SA, Fujitsu Ltd., NEC Corp. and Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co. signed a separate contract with the companies to supply equipment for the network.
Qwst will also be part of this project. Is T dead? Anyone who suggests that they can see what kind of systems will be dominant 20 years hence has either a crystal ball or is a backyard full of mushrooms.

Anyone have any thoughts on why Newbridge was bucking the market for much of today?
