Hi all. Sorry if this might be a bit off-subject.

I could use some software help. Does anyone have experience with how well Virtual PC v2.0 and/or Soft Windows 95 v5.0 run any of the windows/pc-only based TA products (such as MetaStock &/or TradeStation etc...) on Mac G3 OS 8.1? If so, then I'd appreciate comments (personal message would be fine).

Tx, East.

With all the MAC advantages, why has their market share been declining ?? I would be curious to see if anyone on this thread actually knows AAPL's market share during last 5 years.

Anyone??

I used to work on an AAPL back in grade school but for the past few years (way after grade school) I've been using a WinTel machine. I immediately had problems that were more associated with Compaq (NEVER buy one!!) than Windows. However, since the chip, motherboard and everything else was replaced - think I got a lemon or what! - I haven't had any problems. Yes, I'll admit that the system crashes on me more than I would like but I don't have to worry about losing massive amounts of info b/c I "save" all the time.
I have to say the ONLY reason that I cannot convert to an Apple is because of software and compatibility with my friends' files. Also I still don't see why prices should be higher on Apples than competing WinTel boxes. Apple should realize that it is definitely on the defensive and should price accordingly.
They should do something like what Netscape did in order to get developers to write software for the platform. Make it as easy and profitable as possible. I realize that this is a case of the chicken and the egg but consumers will not convert en mass without assurances that:
1) They can use their files from work and from friends at home and vice versa. Interoperability is the key!
2) Software will be developed that will not just compete, but will in fact beat MS.
3) Price competition is here to stay. Get with the program.
4) They won't be caught on the wrong side of this Betamax/VHS shootout. Like here, Betamax had the better technology but lost the battle. Let's hope we've leaned something.

I personally hate Microsoft and I belive that if things don't change MSFT will be divided into Internet, Software, OS (yes, apart from software and internet) Groups. On the corporate level millions could be saved in maintenance costs and time by using Apple OS over Win but as of now the software for corporations like those on Wall St. (where I work) are primarily Win OS based. Also, for the small individual user who doesen't need the power (most people don't need the power of a high end Pentium or a PPC) there's no reason I know of to pay $1,300 when you can now pay 30% less and still get everything you need.
I really do hope that the situation changes so that I'll be able to convert back to Apple.
I liked grade school.

PS I may not own an Apple computer but I love the stock!!!
Go AAPL!

Good Luck All,
Jon

Robert,

>>It's interesting that we wound up recycling this old argument today. Dan Gillmor from the "San Jose Mercury News" posed a question in today's paper that has puzzled Mac users for years, why do Windows users put up with crappy software?:<<

sjmercury.com.

What's really weird is that Gillmor puts up with the same crappy stuff he complains about?!?! Why? Macs run Office 98. Weird.

Lemming syndrome I guess.

<<Gillmor is even more perplexed that Windows users can experience problem after problem, waste days getting their systems right, and still pronounce themselves "delighted" with Microsoft's latest
offering. Amazing. >>

You guys might shoot me for this, but I'm rather satisfied with alot of what Windows has to offer. The faults of the PC platform in my book is only a fraction due to Windows.

Most of it lies in the archaic PC hardware architecture. Using processor technology that is decades old. If Apple had allowed Microsoft to continue providing solid support for the Mac OS, they both could have grown profitable together.

MSFT could have been decades ahead with revolutionary software if they developed fully for the Mac instead of trying to mimic Mac applications on clunky PC hardware. I liken it to a mechanic trying to soup up a volkswagon to run like a Ferrari. Adding intake ducts for nitrous oxide injectors, numerous hoses to carry coolant to the inferior VW engine. Extra buttons and activation relays to add emulated functionality to something that really isn't there, etc.
