well, who's doing all the selling? Are institutional buyers dumping stocks to buy bonds that Japan is dumping back on us, and the index is propped while they make the switch?

The rumor is that GS bailed out Rubin, Greenspan and the boys. Interesting stuff.

ahale.......interesting also to the extent
fleckenstein suggests this is almost common
knowledge among an in the know crowd,
and/or the conspiracy theorists.

his final take is, that wouldn't surprise him.

Given that Goldman Sachs is about (September?) to go public, they have a vested interest in keeping the market afloat until after the IPO. Brokerage stocks get beaten hard during market declines (i.e. MER).

The G.S. IPO could offer a good entry point for the shorts.
