john and all,

a "software system engineer" of 10 years says:

Just going off persona observations in and around the local area - Im a "software system engineer" of 10 years (before that I was in the military) who takes the title of engineer seriously. Thats what has me scared white. I talk with other engineers that I know in what I call "the immdiate vitals" (power, water, telco and rails). First hand they admit that the overall US system as w whole is going to fail, but that their local remediation efforts are bearing fruit in terms of keeping a functional core if things were to go pop this weekend. Hardest is the embedded controller problem - but they were at least working on this last fall to ID the potenitial trouble sources, and now are checking and fixing the "core" system (mains) and hope to have the system 100% checked by years end in the main trunks. Problems come when they walk out to the ends of the feeders (electric and telco and water). They simply dont have the manpower to do it all, but this is alsoi the lowest risk area for y2k failures as there are less computer controlled items and embedded controllers in the delivery system.

best of luck,
steve

Dear John: This is a VERY serious matter. If everyone were to decide to take that amount of money out of the banking system at nearly the same time we would likely have to close down the banking system. There literally is NOT enough liquidity in the system to supply such a huge sum. JDN PS: I already have begun to stockpile some cash. You know it is easier to do a little at a time then all at once.
