That wasn't necessarily bad news about Merced - it was BAD OPINION.

Consider the source - Gwennep and Diefendorff .

Diefendorff - now at Microprocessor Report - was an ex-PowerPC designer at Motorola. Intel (and Apple's and IBM's ineptitude) probably helped put him out of a job.

I would suspect that is why Michael Slater hired him - another unsuccessful designer with an axe to grind against Intel.

Joe,

I think the Merced factor has already been taken out of the stock. Besides I think Merced delay may benefit Intel. Why not saturate the market with XEON before releasing Merced. MSFT Windows NT is still a 32bit OS and the next release sometime in 1999, will also a 32bit OS. I think INTC is just being rational in not pushing Merced before the market is ready.
