Dale and thread,

I always felt Intel's decision to delay Merced was a strategic move, rather than one resulting from technical difficulties. The picture becomes clearer everyday.

Dale J., I agree that this may be the rational thing to do. However, I'm amazed that Mr. Market agrees! Usually a company is punished for pulling a future product.

>I think INTC is just being rational in not pushing Merced before the market is ready.

Well, my opinion about why INTC delayed INTC is just an opinion, so perhaps Paul can confirm that it really was/wasn't for technical reasons. I suspect it WAS a real problem, not a marketing ploy.

However, INTC is to be commended for having a strategy to deal with and even take advantage of the "problem".

The real technical problem, even if Merced could have been ready, is whether MSFT would be ready to play in the high end and whether HP/UX is an acceptable OS to replace SUN. Those seem like big issues to me.
