Personally, I think we should all be REQUIRED to carry handguns. That way criminals would never know who to pick on and if one of these whackos tries to shoot up the local McDonalds or whatever, he'd be outgunned. <GGG> JLA

Michelle:

...because I dont think violent offenders should be able to get out of prison, make a pit stop at their local gun shop (which is probably frequented by other ex-prisoners and a bunch of wackos straight out of a Quentin Tarantino movie), pick up a gun, and abduct a 10 yr old kid living in a town 100 miles away.

Neither do I. It's been a federal crime for a convicted felon (or someone with a history of mental instability) to purchase firearms since the Gun Control Act of 1968. Despite frequent new legislation trying to restrict the unlawful ownership and use of guns, criminals and would-be criminals still manage to buy, steal, find, barter, and manufacture weapons.

Furthermore, I think it's society's duty to remove violent criminals from circulation rather than blame the implement used to force their will upon others. In short, punish the criminals, not the guns or the law-abiding citizens.

Michelle,

I think I hear a bit of bigotry coming out in that post. Judging a whole group of people by stereotypes. Tsk Tsk.

I'd like to just agree with your first statement: I don't think violent offenders should be able to get out of prison. That would take care of a lot of subsequent crime, gun-related and otherwise...
